 If the adult is like this with everyone, the behaviour is not necessarily toxic. It might not be friendly, but it’s not toxic. Remember that one of the tools of the trade for toxic people is to blame other people for their own messed up behaviour. 

Give the adult the benefit of the information. Most people will be pleased to receive the information as the last thing a non-toxic person would want to do is to unknowingly cause distress. Now, it’s still important to listen and learn from people when they remind you about things you need to do differently – it’s the secret of being awesome. It’s important to respect other people, but it’s even more important to respect yourself first – and putting up your forcefield is one of the ways you can do this.
